Car Suspension Systems (SHOCK ABSORBER)

Shock absorber is a device that absorbs vibrations and impacts of wheels, suspension and bodywork, converting mechanical energy into heat.This accessory provides not only comfort but also traffic safety.

Types and construction of shock absorbers.

Depending on the content:

  • Hydraulics.The oil is used as a means of operation.
  • Gas-Oil. Compressed nitrogen passes into the system at high pressure and prevents oil from spilling.

Depending on the construction design:

  • Double pass. Their advantage is the simplicity of their construction. Their drawbacks are the rapid overheating and foaming of the oil, which degrades the quality of their operation. The shock absorbers have a cylinder mounted in the housing. At the time of compression, the piston attached to the rod moves down, forcing the oil to come out of the cylinder and into the housing. During the release, the opposite happens.
  • Single passThe above disadvantages do not exist here, but any damage to the casing results in the shock absorber collapsing. The casing acts as a roller. The floating piston separates the shock absorber into 2 parts: the one is pumped with nitrogen and the other with the oil. Vibration absorption occurs due to compression of the gas.

Shock absorber faults

  • deformation of the parts;
  • seal leakage;
  • valve failure.

Symptoms of shock absorber faults

  • body swaying;
  • increased stopping distance;
  • the vehicle goes into a turn at a lower speed;
  • knocking and other sounds appear while driving;
  • uneven tire wear;
  • the presence of oil smudges on the part;
  • vehicle “dips” during acceleration and braking.

Causes of shock absorber faults

  • poor quality of road surface;
  • aggressive driving style;
  • untimely service;
  • temperature drop;
  • impact of dirt and chemically active substances;
  • lack of oil in the reservoir;
  • failure of the components.

Replacing the shock absorber

Current models of shock absorbers are undismountable. The item must be replaced in case of failure, the shock absorber repair is not carried out. Breaking one shock absorber requires replacement of the other on the same axis. You can replace them by yourself. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. remove the wheel;
  2. disconnect brake hoses, if necessary;
  3. dismantle the upper strut mountings, and then the lower ones;
  4. remove the spring using special pullers;
  5. put the new part in place of the old one and perform the above steps in reverse order.
